As California’s leader in large animal care, UC Davis provides essential services for the state’s equine community and its $14 billion livestock/dairy industry, treating thousands of patients every year.
Comprehensive Care and Expertise
As one of the largest veterinary hospitals in the country, we offer animal owners and producers the highest level of care for their equine and livestock animals. Led by board-certified veterinary specialists, the Large Animal Hospital sees thousands of patients a year, and provides both in-hospital care and field services directly at ranches, farms, and production facilities.
Our faculty veterinarians are some of the most skilled and experienced clinicians available. The hospital currently provides services ranging from routine farrier services and soundness evaluations to the most complex surgeries needed.

Innovation and Expansion
A new facility for equine and livestock animals will expand our capacity to deliver world-class care while advancing innovation.
The Large Animal Hospital and Equine Rehabilitation Center expansion will enable the school to treat more animals, optimize our clinical layout, upgrade equipment, and incorporate leading-edge approaches to equine and livestock surgery, reproductive health and treatment for injuries.
A Facility Designed for the Future
The new hospital will enable the school to serve more patients by adding nearly 15,000 square feet, with operating rooms closer to the Large Animal ICU and examination spaces near the diagnostic imaging center, surgical suites and hospital ward.
Additionally, the expansion will add state-of-the-art facilities and equipment within the new Equine Surgical Center to support a range of planned and emergency surgeries. Expansion in support of equine health is a significant part of the project, and will also enhance the Equine Theriogenology Center, which offers comprehensive reproductive health care and training for the specialized needs of breeding horses.
The expansion also creates a new lameness evaluation arena adjacent to a trotting lane, examination spaces and diagnostic imaging to enhance evaluation and care for injured horses.
